Over the years I’ve had a love-hate relationship with exercise. I’ve lost track of how many times I’d start a fitness regime only to give up a few weeks later. I’d tell myself that I’m too tired, I don’t have time etc. I think I deserve to be officially crowned a ‘Queen of excuses’ 😉
However, at the beginning of this year I finally decided that it’s about time I become more serious about exercising. I’m not doing this to shed X amount of pounds from my body. I simply want to be healthier and feel more energised.
Knowing my history, jumping into a rigorous workout routine was not going to work for me. So instead I prepared a small plan to change my attitude towards exercising and make it fun. If you’re anything like me, I hope these simple steps help you achieve your health and fitness goals. Remember exercise shouldn’t be a punishment.
Establish achievable goals
Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you expect too much in a short period of time and don’t see desired effects, your motivation will decrease. Fitness should be about pleasure not pressure. For example, I initially started following a simple four-week plan that helped me work up to walking (without stopping) to 30 minutes.
We all have ups and downs. The key to success is believing that you can do it.
Keep it healthy
Although I’m a huge chocoholic and could literally have chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I scoured Pinterest for some easy to prepare healthy eating recipes. Having said that I still allow myself to have some treats once a week. My body simply craves sugar and I learnt not to beat myself up for a moment of weakness.
Do what you enjoy
There is no point of forcing yourself into doing something that you don’t enjoy. I have a gym phobia (is this a word?) so I prefer to work out from home. A while ago I bought a boxing bag and a bunch of DVDs so I try to switch my routines to push my body and mind.
